There is nothing more essential for a mom than a versatile, chic handbag. This week, we’re excited to announce our first collaboration with August, a gorgeous line of luxury (yet affordable!) handbags made domestically in Los Angeles.
We’re now featuring five of our favorite August bags, including two large totes; a versatile crossbody; a clutch; and, fan favorite among LA moms, a “MAMA” monogrammed pouch for all your essentials.
Stay tuned for new editions coming for Fall, as well as our first TILDEN exclusive – an incredibly elegant and equally practical diaper/work/weekend bag for moms – designed and manufactured by August.
Read on to learn why we love the August brand and its amazing founder and mom of two, Jenna Jackson.
What does it take to create a best-selling handbag line? Two degrees, half a decade of industry experience, world travel, killer personal style, and a philanthropic desire to give back, if August founder Jenna Jackson is your proxy.
Jackson, herself an LA-native, received her BA from UC Berkeley in English and a masters in Luxury and Fashion Management from Savannah College of Art and Design. She spent over five years in senior merchant roles across retailers, including four years at Gap, Inc. Oh, and she was a runway model, too. Can we say mom goals?!
Jackson says she was inspired to create a line of bags that were not only practical, but beautiful, after she struggled to find pieces that offered both for her own travels.
“I found ‘travel bags’ and super cool ‘fashion bags,’ but nothing that merged the two,” she said. In founding August, the goal was a line that offered both.
August is named after the most traveled month of the year to inspire customers to get out and adventure, family or not.
“We are extremely thoughtful about weight and pockets,” Jackson said of her lightweight bags. “We always keep travel at the heart of our brand.”
August features dynamic prints – think stingray embossed Italian calf skin, woven cork with leather accents, and snake-embossed Italian goat skin with ombre painted detail. The company works with leading tanneries in Italy to find leathers that are hand-painted. They’re also working with a tannery in Brazil that can laser print on leather.
Jackson says August is committed to providing luxury handbags at affordable costs.
“We use the people and techniques seen on the best designer bags, but we never charge more than $600,” she said.
August is also partnered with a non-profit organization called Operation School Bell, which helps to outfit at-risk children in the Los Angeles area for school. For every bag sold, August donates a backpack to a student in need in Los Angeles.
“We want our customers to feel great about purchasing from August,” Jackson said. “With every purchase, you’re supporting local female-led businesses and giving back to kids in need.”
Her bags, by the way, are all manufactured in a women-run factory in LA. They’ve been featured across top fashion publications, including Vogue, Elle, Refinery29, InStyle, People, and many (many) more.
Q&A WITH JENNA JACKSON
WHAT INSPIRED THE AUGUST BRAND?
My husband and I were both living and working in San Francisco when we decided to take a year off and travel around the world before having kids. August is inspired by the places we went and the bags we wished we had while we traveled.
WHAT MUST-HAVES DOES AUGUST FEATURE?
For me, August is all about versatility. We couldn't find bags with really functional pockets, but that looked really chic for everyday.
WHAT CAME FIRST? BUSINESS OR KIDS?
We launched days before my oldest son Keller was born, so I always know EXACTLY how old my company is!
HOW DOES LAUNCHING A COMPANY COMPARE TO STARTING A FAMILY?
August is like another baby for me. I love it more than I can express, but it isn't without challenges and a lot of sleepless nights.
ADVICE FOR FELLOW FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS?
Talk to your peers! The amazing female mentors, champions, and friends I’ve made have been crucial to the success of August. I try and have at least monthly meetings with other female founders – especially moms! We chat about life, kids, and business. It’s mutually beneficial – I see where I can help and always glean so much from these incredible conversations.
FAVORITE AUGUST BAG?
I think picking a favorite bag would be like picking a favorite kid – impossible.
WHAT’S COMING NEXT FOR AUGUST?
Our collaboration with TILDEN! August was founded on the principle of versatility – a necessity for moms! We’re looking forward to our first product collaboration – a versatile bag made specifically for moms on the go.
TIPS ON TRAVELING WITH KIDS?
My oldest son has been to 15 countries and my littlest guy to five! My biggest piece of advice is to shift your focus a bit. Your travels with kids won't be as relaxing as they may have been in the past. I hope that our commitment to exposing our kids to different places and cultures will instill in them a broader worldview and encourage them to be open, kind individuals. Think curiosity and fulfillment, not deep sleep and fine wine. It’ll be worth it, I promise!
MOST ADVENTUROUS PLACE YOU’VE TRAVELED WITH FAMILY?
When our oldest was six months old we did a road trip from Serbia to Bosnia to Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy...No joke, right?
Last summer we took both boys on another road trip through Germany, Austria, and into Italy for a wedding. But even with all of that - a week in Iceland with a 3.5 year old and a six month-old baby was by far the craziest!
WHERE TO NEXT?
My husband and I are actually planning a solo adventure for once! He has to go to China for work in the fall and we are trying to figure out an add-on trip – maybe Myanmar, Mongolia, or rural Japan. Planning is half the fun. You can really connect with your partner about your previous experiences and future dreams.
WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO FASHION PIECES FOR MOMS?
I'm having a real love affair with A.L.C. right now and I LOVE the pieces TILDEN has curated from them. I'm loving the dresses, especially, because they look amazing with some cool Ancient Greek Sandals as well as hot for fall with studded ankle boots and a leather jacket!
